AGE REQUIREMENTS FOR PRE-KINDERGARTEN

We have three Pre-Kindergarten classes:

PK 2/3 .... students must be at least two by September 1

PK 3/4 .... students must be at least three by September 1

PK 4 .... students must be at least four by September 1.  These students would then enter Kindergarten the following year.

Language Arts

Direct instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, handwriting, and written language is included in a comprehensive Language Arts program.

Students in Pre-kindergarten should know and be able to:
• listen attentively in a variety of situations.
• comprehend basic concepts.
• classify information.
• communicate ideas clearly when speaking.
• recite nursery rhymes, finger plays, songs, and poems.
• demonstrate phonological awareness skills.
• identify some upper and lower case letters.
• demonstrate an awareness of the concepts of print.
• sequence and retell events or stories.
• comprehend information in fiction and non-fiction texts.
• communicate ideas through drawings, scribble, symbols, and letters.
• use pictures to perform a task.

Mathematics

The elementary mathematics content includes algebra, geometry, measurement, statistics, probability, and number relationships and computation. Students explore these concepts through problem solving, reasoning, communicating ideas about math, and making connections within math and to other subject areas and to the real world.

Students in Pre-kindergarten should know and be able to:
• count orally to 10.
• use one-to-one correspondence (touch an object and give it a number name) to count up to five objects.
• match objects that are the same size, shape, and color.
• sort objects by one characteristic (color, size, shape, etc.).
• use materials to make a simple pattern (such as red/blue/red/blue/red/blue).
• identify the shapes triangle, circle, and square by name.
• begin to orally use mathematical vocabulary to describe and explain thinking.
